HEALTH BENEFITS OF APRICOTS
The benefits of dried apricots are mainly due to the high beta-carotene content of apricots. Beta-carotene helps with the formation of Vitamin A and is abundant in yellow fruit, such as apricots and nectarines, as well as yellow and dark green leafy vegetables such as carrots, spinach, pumpkins and squash, sweet potatoes and cantaloupes. This extra dose of beta-carotene helps ensure good eyesight and protection from normal causes of vision impairment.
On top of beta-carotene and Vitamin A, the benefits of dried apricots also extend to minerals like Iron and Potassium. Iron is essential in the healthy formation of haemoglobin which is the substance in the blood that allows the transport of oxygen to the organs. Potassium contributes to normal muscle function and maintenance of stable blood pressure.
Dried apricots are high in dietary fibre. The soluble dietary fibre in the apricots plays a role in glucose absorption and maintaining a healthy blood cholesterol level, while the insoluble dietary fibre helps to keep the gut healthy and contributes to regular laxation, thereby helping to treat constipation.
